Blackburn College received funding from Ufi VocTech Trust to explore the development of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) resources to support skills and employment in the Textiles industry. The aim was to trial two new resources that would enable people to gain a greater understanding of the Textiles industry to reduce misconceptions of the workplace environment, promote the job roles within the industry and use technology to allow people to develop their sewing skills beyond the classroom.
The project has created two resources – one using AR technology that allows people to learn basic sewing machine skills outside of the classroom. The second, uses VR technology to provide a window into a real factory environment. In partnership with Herbert Parkinson we have scanned their factory to show what a factory environment is like and talk to some of the staff about their roles in the industry.
A series of films were made by Aaron Dunleavy and The British Textile Biennial to enrich the viewers experience of the virtual reality model.
