The Harris

The Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library, affectionately known as The Harris, is a prominent cultural institution situated in the heart of Preston, Lancashire. Established in 1893, the Grade I listed building was a gift to the people of Preston from Edmund Robert Harris, intended to serve as a beacon of culture, education, and civic pride.

he Harris is renowned for its diverse collections, which encompass fine art, costume and textiles, ceramics and glass, photography, and local history. Notably, it houses the largest collection of work by the Devis family of painters and an exceptional contemporary photography collection. The museum also boasts significant archaeological finds, including the skeleton of an Ice Age elk and artifacts from the Viking Cuerdale hoard.

In 2025, The Harris is undergoing a major redevelopment known as the Harris Your Place project, a £16 million initiative aimed at modernizing the facility while preserving its historic charm. This transformation seeks to enhance accessibility, integrate the museum and library services, and establish The Harris as a dynamic community hub for the 21st century.
