Weaving the Future

Weaving the Future is a multi-media installation exploring how the innovative spirit that powered the textile industry over the last three centuries is driving a new revolution for the 21st century. Textile technologies are now being transformed to supply niche markets with special yarns and fabrics, or adapted to create a huge variety of innovative materials, from heart valves and artificial knees to astronaut’s vests and space satellites.

Set against the backdrop of cards that manually ‘programmed’ the Jacquard looms in Queen Street Mill, photographer and filmmaker Tim Smith collaborates with musicians and performers to reveal the link between the analogue and digital worlds.
