Blackburn Cathedral is one of England’s newest cathedrals, yet it is one of the country’s oldest places of Christian worship. Originally constructed as a parish church in the 19th century, Blackburn Cathedral saw significant contributions from local businesses and mill owners during the rise of the cotton industry. This support played a vital role in its construction and upkeep, and paved the way to its elevation to cathedral status in 1926.
The cathedral showcases a blend of Gothic Revival and Romanesque styles, featuring intricate stained glass windows casting vibrant colors across the stone floor as sunlight streams in.
Initially constructed in the early 20th century, the crypt serves both functional and ceremonial purposes. The atmosphere in the crypt is often more subdued and contemplative, providing a space for quiet reflection away from the activity of the cathedral above.
