Opened in 1874, Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery was one of the first purpose-built free museums outside of London. It is characterised by its red brick façade and impressive portico entrance. The museum showcases a rich collection of art, local and natural history.
The Museum features historical textiles and cotton machinery highlighting the region’s industrial heritage, including spinning frames, weaving looms, carding machines, and power looms. These exhibits provide valuable insight into the technological innovations that shaped the cotton industry in Blackburn, reflecting its importance to the local economy and community.
Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery aim to preserve local history and culture for future generations, foster creativity by providing a platform for local artists, and enhance learning through accessible educational programmes. By engaging diverse audiences and promoting community collaboration, the museum seeks to enrich the cultural landscape while recognising the role of art in enhancing wellbeing and creating spaces for reflection and interaction.
