The Birley is Preston’s leading artist-led studio and contemporary project space, located on Birley Street in the heart of the city. Founded in 2014 by a collective of UCLan graduates under Post Post CIC, The Birley provides affordable studio spaces for emerging and established artists while hosting a vibrant programme of exhibitions, residencies, performances, and community events.
Housed in a former council building, the space has grown significantly—supporting over 25 artists and becoming a hub for experimental and socially engaged practice. As Preston’s only city-centre contemporary art venue, The Birley plays a vital role in the region’s cultural landscape, championing collaboration, accessibility, and artistic development.
Artist- and volunteer-run, The Birley is committed to making art public, relevant, and rooted in place—shaping a dynamic creative presence in Lancashire.
