Towneley Hall

Built in the mid-19th century, Towneley Hall was commissioned by the wealthy industrialist John Towneley, who belonged to a prominent local family involved in the wool and coal industries. The hall features a mix of architectural styles, predominantly Gothic Revival, characterised by its intricate stonework, pointed arches, and elaborate detailing.

Towenely Hall was not only a private residence but also a symbol of the wealth and influence of the Towneley family during the Industrial Revolution. Towneley Hall is set within expansive parkland featuring beautifully landscaped gardens, lawns, and mature woodlands, creating a setting that reflects Victorian ideals of nature and aesthetics.

The house showcases a wide range of displays, including natural history, Egyptology, local history, decorative arts, regional furniture and an art gallery with a strong emphasis on romantic Victorian and pre-Raphaelite works. Towneley has a large collection of textiles, including historic garments, intricate tapestries, and beautifully crafted embroideries. These pieces reflect both local craftsmanship and provides a valuable insight into the broader historic textile traditions.
